DTG or Screen Printing? The times they are a-changing
Until recently, screen printing would be the choice of most printers for orders over 100 garments. Although the time involved in creating screens, mixing inks etc. is quite high, the cost per print, still made screen printing the best choice. Now, digital printing is becoming another option, even for larger orders.
The latest Kornit range of Digital DTG printers has been developed to reduce print costs to be similar to that of a screen print. The HD6 technology makes digital printing competitive on medium runs up to 500 pieces, and on small orders, digital is much much cheaper.
Add on to this the fact that digital printing is more or less instant from design to print. No screens to make, no mixing of inks, no cleaning up the screens afterwards. Simply load your digital file, select the garment colour and press print. Not only that but with DTG printing you are not restricted by colour. As many colours as you like, with no extra cost.
The new technology allows A3 prints in full colour on dark garments for around £0.48. This all revolves around new print head technology and a new type of ink. Their new Neo-pigment ink meets the highest sustainability standards and matches retail quality demands and durability. The ink gives vivid bold colours and exceptional colour matching for all types of artwork styles. The inks are water-based, non-hazardous and toxin-free.
DTG printing has always been a much cleaner process than screen printing but the cost per print was stopping screen printers from considering it as an option. Screen printers should now take a good look at the new technology or face being left behind.
The other massive benefit of going digital is that you will need less qualified staff to operate your production unit. You can go directly from the web to production, from printer to dryer with one person, and no clean up at the end of a shift.
Finally, the footprint of a Kornit machine is significantly smaller than your standard screen print set up, save space, save money.
